Microsoft has announced plans to train 1 million South Africans in artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity skills by 2026. Lillian Barnard, President of Microsoft Africa, highlighted that this initiative aims to provide skilling opportunities and industry-recognized certifications, enabling the youth to compete globally.
This effort builds upon Microsoft’s previous commitments in the region. In May 2024, the company invested R1.3 billion to spur job creation and enhance digital capabilities among small, medium, and micro-enterprises (SMMEs) and youth. The investment focuses on developing skills in areas such as cloud computing, data analysis, AI, and machine learning.
Additionally, in October 2023, Microsoft partnered with the Youth Employment Service (YES) to launch the AI Youth Training Platform, aiming to empower 300,000 young South Africans with digital skills. This program offers tailored training paths from novice to expert levels, fostering a culture of innovation and employability.
These initiatives reflect Microsoft’s ongoing commitment to addressing youth unemployment and bridging the digital skills gap in South Africa, positioning the country’s workforce to thrive in an increasingly digital global economy.
