MICROSOFT’S ‘PRIVACY NIGHTMARE’ IS BACK! AI Screenshot Tool Rolls Out Despite Outcry!

Microsoft is pushing forward with its AI-powered screenshot tool, igniting privacy concerns and raising eyebrows across the tech world. Dubbed a ‘privacy nightmare’ by critics, the Copilot+ Recall feature is now in preview mode for select users with Microsoft’s AI PCs and laptops. This relaunch follows a previous pause in 2024 after initial announcements triggered widespread alarm.

After limited testing, Microsoft is expanding access through its Windows Insider program. While a global rollout is planned, EU users will face a delay until later in 2025. The core function of Recall is to allow users to easily search through past PC activity, including files, photos, emails, and browsing history. Microsoft claims this will allow users to quickly find content they’ve previously viewed, even days later.

Despite Microsoft’s assurances, privacy advocates remain deeply skeptical. Dr. Kris Shrishak, a vocal critic, acknowledges the opt-in mechanism as ‘an improvement’ but warns of potential misuse, highlighting the capture of data from individuals who cannot consent. The feature’s ability to save images from emails and messaging apps like WhatsApp raises concerns about the storage of private communications.

Microsoft emphasizes that Recall data is stored locally and not shared with the company or third parties. Identity verification is required before accessing snapshots, and users can choose which apps are monitored and delete captured screenshots. The UK’s data watchdog, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), is actively engaged with Microsoft, stressing the need for improved user transparency and data protection. The ICO stated that it ‘does not grant prior approval for any products or services’ and will take action if organizations fail to safeguard data protection rights.
