Microsoft Extends Office Support on Windows 10 Until 2028

Microsoft plans to end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. After this date, the operating system will no longer receive security updates or official support. However, Microsoft has recently updated its policy for Office apps on Windows 10. Users running Microsoft 365 apps on Windows 10 will continue receiving updates and support until October 2028. This extension is intended to maintain security during the transition to Windows 11.

The perpetually licensed Office versions will follow a slightly different timeline. Office 2021 on Windows 10 will be supported until October 2026, while Office 2024 will receive updates until October 2029. Some Microsoft support pages still show outdated dates, but the new timeline reflects Microsoft’s effort to help users who opt for the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program.

For businesses, the ESU program offers between one and three additional years of security updates after the official end-of-support date, with prices increasing each year. Individual users can purchase a single extra year of updates for a flat fee of $30 per PC. Despite this extension for Office apps, upgrading to Windows 11 may still be necessary for older PCs, as the new operating system has stricter hardware requirements. Microsoft has positioned 2025 as “the year of the Windows 11 PC refresh,” encouraging users to upgrade their devices for a smoother transition.
