In a groundbreaking move, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is set to gift its entire population free access to ChatGPT Plus, making it the first nation in the world to do so. This ambitious initiative is part of a significant partnership between OpenAI and the UAE government, aiming to transform the country into a regional AI hub. The deal involves the construction of Stargate UAE, a massive AI data center in Abu Dhabi, with a planned one-gigawatt AI computing cluster. The first phase, comprising about 200 megawatts, is expected to launch next year. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman hails the project as a “bold vision” to extend AI benefits like better healthcare and education globally.
The Stargate UAE project falls under OpenAI’s “OpenAI for Countries” program, designed to assist nations in developing their own AI systems in collaboration with the United States. Big players like Oracle, Nvidia, Cisco, SoftBank, and G42 (a Microsoft-backed Middle Eastern AI company) are also involved, solidifying the UAE’s position in the AI landscape. Millions currently use ChatGPT for tasks such as writing, studying, and coding, and this partnership ensures free access to these advanced AI tools for all UAE residents.
Beyond data centers, the project focuses on tailoring AI to local needs, supporting local languages, and adhering to regional regulations. The UAE has also committed to matching its domestic AI spending with investments in U.S. AI projects, potentially amounting to $20 billion in total. OpenAI’s Chief Strategy Officer, Jason Kwon, plans to explore similar partnerships in the Asia Pacific region, signaling a broader vision to empower countries with AI capabilities.
